What is cataract

Cataract is a common disease. At present, in both developed and developing countries, cataract is the main eye disease that causes blindness. According to the results of our investigation, cataract is also one of the eye diseases that cause blindness in our country.

Under normal circumstances, the crystal lens behind the pupil is transparent, and when it appears cloudy, it is cataract. At first, turbidity had little effect on vision, and then gradually increased, obviously affecting vision and even blindness.

The exact cause of cataract is unclear, and may be related to aging of the age, genetic factors, excessive ultraviolet radiation, and certain inflammatory diseases in the eye. It usually occurs in both eyes, but the time may vary, and the severity may be different. Trauma can also cause cataracts. Cataracts often occur in people over 50 years of age, and cataracts occur early in patients with high myopia and diabetes, but not every elderly person will have cataracts, and not everyone who gets cataracts will be blind and need surgery.

There is currently no definite prevention and treatment method for cataracts. Some people have used oral vitamin C, local eye drops or traditional Chinese medicine. Surgery is a proven way to treat cataracts. In general, if the vision of a cataract patient is less than 0.1, it will affect normal work and life, and surgery can be considered. Some people with higher vision requirements from 0.3 to 0.4 may also consider surgery.

In the vast rural areas of our country, extracapsular or intracapsular cataract extraction is still used. It is necessary to wear a larger degree of convex lens (telopescopy) to correct vision after surgery, which is more economical. Where conditions permit, most of them now use intraocular lens implantation, and their eyesight recovers quickly after surgery. Cataract phacoemulsification is a new operation in recent years. It has the advantages of small incision and fast recovery. In order to ensure good results of the operation, a full-body examination should be done before the operation. For patients with hypertension, diabetes, and eye inflammation, it is necessary to perform the operation after treatment.
